Transforming urban landscapes into thriving eco parks — absorbing rain, nurturing biodiversity, and reclaiming nature.
As Tamil Nadu\'s urban areas expand, green spaces are disappearing at an alarming rate. Geo India Foundation\'s Eco Parks and Sponge Parks program directly combats this trend by adopting, developing, and maintaining public green spaces that serve a dual purpose: providing nature experiences for communities while performing critical environmental services.
Our sponge parks are specially designed urban green spaces that absorb and slowly release rainwater — reducing flash flooding, recharging aquifers, and reducing the burden on city drainage systems. Each sponge park features permeable pathways, rain gardens, native plant meadows, and retention ponds.
Beyond water management, our eco parks function as urban biodiversity corridors — connecting fragmented green spaces and providing habitats for birds, insects, and small mammals amidst the concrete jungle. With over 20,000 sq.ft. of urban space greened across 3+ districts, we are rebuilding the living fabric of Tamil Nadu\'s cities.
Our eco park interventions combine ecological design principles with community needs to create spaces that are both beautiful and functionally resilient.
Engineering parks with rain gardens, bioswales, and permeable surfaces that absorb up to 80% of local stormwater runoff, dramatically reducing urban flooding.
Planting indigenous trees, shrubs, and ground cover that attract pollinators, support local wildlife, and thrive with minimal water and maintenance inputs.
Partnering with municipal corporations to adopt neglected public parks, funding their rejuvenation, and handing them back as vibrant community assets.
Training resident welfare associations to maintain, protect, and promote eco parks as community assets — creating local green champions in every neighbourhood.
Eco parks in dense urban neighbourhoods have created localised cooling zones, reducing ambient temperatures by up to 3°C and providing refuge for residents during extreme heat events.
Five sponge parks have collectively absorbed millions of litres of stormwater during monsoon seasons, significantly reducing waterlogging and property damage in surrounding areas.
Native planting in eco parks has attracted 40+ bird species, numerous butterfly species, and vital pollinators — rebuilding urban ecosystems one park at a time.
Support our eco park and sponge park initiatives by donating or volunteering. Together, we can turn every neglected urban space into a thriving green oasis for communities and wildlife alike.
