From tribal villages to urban communities — every story is proof that change is possible.
In one of Geo India Foundation's most ambitious single-day drives, we partnered with local volunteers, student groups, and railway authorities to plant 5,000 trees along the periphery of Taramani Railway Station in Chennai — turning a concrete-dominated transit hub into the beginning of an urban forest.
The drive addressed a critical urban need: Chennai's rapid development had reduced its tree canopy significantly over the past decade. Rising temperatures, urban heat islands, and deteriorating air quality in densely populated transit zones made Taramani an ideal location for intervention.
Over 500 volunteers — from engineering colleges, local schools, and corporate partners — came together at dawn to dig, plant, and water saplings of native species including Pongamia, Neem, Banyan, and Rain Trees. Each sapling was tagged and enrolled in our long-term maintenance program, ensuring survival beyond just the planting day.
One year after planting, a follow-up survey showed a survival rate of over 87%. The trees now provide shade for daily commuters, filter particulate matter, and have attracted several species of birds back to the station area. This project has since inspired similar drives at Tambaram, Sholinganallur, and Perambur stations.
Behind every program is a real person whose life was changed. Here are a few of the stories that keep us going.
Tribal Woman Entrepreneur
Tribal Community, Tamil Nadu
Shanthi had a talent for stitching — but no machine and no means to buy one. Living in a tribal village with her two children, her family's income was precarious and unpredictable. Geo India Foundation provided Shanthi with a professional tailoring machine and basic business training through our Women Empowerment Program.
Today, Shanthi runs a thriving home-based tailoring business, stitching school uniforms and blouses for her community. Her monthly income has grown from near zero to a stable ₹8,000–12,000 — enough to send her children to school, save for emergencies, and repay a small loan she took to expand her operations.
Single Mother & Business Owner
Chennai, Tamil Nadu
Shayidha Banu is a single mother of two daughters in Chennai. After her husband passed away, she was left without income and with two young girls depending entirely on her. She had the skill and drive to cook — but no capital to start even the smallest food business.
Through our Community Welfare and Livelihood Program, Geo India Foundation provided Shayidha Banu with a push cart and initial stock support. She launched a tiffin shop near a local market, serving fresh idli, dosa, and rice meals every morning. Her daughters are now in school, and she has built enough savings to expand her business. "I feel strong and independent now," she says with pride.
IT Professional at Cognizant
Tamil Nadu
Stephen grew up in a government orphanage in Tamil Nadu. Bright, determined, and passionate about computers, he faced a wall when he scored well enough for engineering college but had no financial means to enroll. Without support, his dream of a tech career would have ended there.
Geo India Foundation's Higher Education Support Program identified Stephen through our school outreach network and provided a full scholarship covering tuition, hostel, books, and a laptop. He completed his B.Tech in Computer Science and, in 2023, was placed at Cognizant Technology Solutions. "From an orphan to an IT professional — this is a miracle that Geo India Foundation made possible," Stephen says.
Urban Greening Initiative
Chennai Metro Areas
When temperatures in Chennai's eastern suburbs began routinely exceeding 42°C in summer, residents of Sholinganallur pleaded for shade and green cover along the main road. For years, requests to authorities went unanswered.
Geo India Foundation mobilized 300 local volunteers, secured permission from the municipality, and planted 800 native trees — Pongamia, Rain Tree, and Neem — along a 2.5 km stretch. Within two growing seasons, the corridor now provides substantial shade, the road temperature has dropped measurably, and birds have returned. Residents call it their "neighbourhood forest."
Water Body Restoration
Chengalpattu District
A lake that had sustained farming communities in Chengalpattu for generations had been reduced to a shallow, weed-choked basin. Decades of encroachment and neglect had left farmers dependent on expensive borewell water.
Geo India Foundation coordinated a 45-day desilting and restoration project with village panchayat cooperation, removing 3,000+ truckloads of silt and reinforcing bunds. The lake now holds water through summer, has recharged local groundwater tables, and 200+ farming families have returned to rainwater-supported cultivation.
Government School Revitalization
Thiruvallur District
A government primary school in Thiruvallur District had crumbling, moss-covered walls, broken furniture, and dropout rates that had climbed to alarming levels. Teachers reported children being embarrassed to invite parents to school.
Geo India Foundation volunteers spent two weekends painting the walls with bright educational murals — maps, alphabets, science illustrations, and motivational quotes. New benches were provided, the blackboard was replaced, and the entry gate was repainted. Enrolment rose 18% the following academic year. Teachers reported significantly improved student attendance and morale.
"The sewing machine changed everything for me. I was struggling every day — now I have my own work and my children go to school properly. I never thought I could have a business of my own. Geo India Foundation believed in me when no one else did."
"The push cart changed my life. Now I can run my tiffin shop and take care of my daughters. I feel strong and independent now. When I look at my daughters studying, I know everything I went through was worth it."
"From being an orphan to working at Cognizant — this is a miracle. The scholarship gave me more than money. It gave me a future I could not even imagine. I want to give back someday the same way Geo India Foundation gave to me."
